Fashionably Festive:  Louise’s Guide to Christmas in London.

I’m packing my suitcase right now, full of neatly wrapped-up presents to take back to England for Christmas. London is one of the most romantic, fun, beautiful places during the festive period, so if you’re thinking of heading there, here are my absolute favourite things to do in Winter…
Have afternoon tea at The Wolesley on Piccadilly, it’s so old school and grand. Next door is where the Queen gets her food- a beautiful 300 year old department store called Fortnum&Mason. And across the street is the Academy of Art- always great for interesting exhibitions.
Spend a (Friday if possible) day in Notting Hill. Portobello Market is gorgeous, full of antiques, vintage clothing and plenty of charm. Have dinner at Julie’s - it’s tucked away right by the street where Elton John lives and is a maze of different little dining rooms, all decorated differently.
If you’re game for a fun tour, there’s a bus that turns into a boat (yes really. Just like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) called the Duck Tour…I took a friend and we didn’t stop cackling from start to finish: it’s genius, and the guides are all comedians.
The Tower of London is epic, from the Beefeaters and the infamous black ravens, to the crown jewels. And then you can’t go to London without visiting a traditional pub. The Swag & Tails in Knightsbridge is up a windy lane across from from Harrods. The log fire burns and it’s a very local spot, no tourists ever find. Don’t miss the Punchbowl in Mayfair either, Guy Richie owns it. Try the Shepherd’s Pie. Oh and book tickets now to go ice skating after dark at Somerset House. The whole ancient building is lit up and the gigantic Christmas tree is decorated by Tiffany’s.  Stock up on fresh foods at Borough Market. Walking around, you’ll spot Bridget Jones’ very recognisable apartment, and you must try one of their barbecued sausages, which you can eat on the Southbank whilst watching the boats float by on the Thames. Shopping for gifts doesn’t get much better than Walton Street in South Kensington, it’s like Melrose Place. Westbourne Grove is more like the equivalent of Robertson Boulevard in LA, a mix of affordable and designer apparel, and delicious organic cafes. Finally, Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is a smorgasbord of European delicacies and fairground rides.

December Update!

It’s about to be December and that means…my birthday! I’m so looking
forward to catching up with friends for a long, sunny lunch in LA this
weekend – and most excitingly of all, my best friend is flying all the
way from London to be with me here. We’re going to have a blast –
shopping on Robertson Boulevard, checking out the art at the MOMA,
hiking Runyon Canyon, horse-riding in Malibu and, of course, drinking
lots of cocktails at my favourite West Hollywood spot, Eveleigh. I love
this time of year in LA – the leaves turn red, the evenings get chilly
enough to wear a cute Winter coat, and a load of people leave town so
the roads feel empty. One of my favourite new discoveries is Studio
City’s Farmer’s Market: fresh fruit, veg and flowers line the street,
and there’s even a petting zoo at the end with piglets and miniature
horses! I felt about 5 year’s old again climbing into their little pen.
Work-wise, I’m putting the final touches to my Spring clothing line for
HSN, and shoe & jewellery line for www.Stylistpick.com. I cannot WAIT
to show you guys the insane prints and bright colours coming up next
season, it’s making my mouth water just thinking about it.

MTV EMAs

I touched Lady Gaga. Yup, she brushed passed me with her satellite-meets-colossal-silver-tutu dress, backstage at Sunday’s EMA Awards as she stomped down the corridors ready to perform. The word fierce doesn’t even cover it: that chick has balls of steel- not a stage-fright nerve in sight. The rest of my weekend was spent hot-footing around freezing-but-sunny Belfast, filming segments for MTV News (check out all the piccies from the weekend on www.mtv.com). Then it was showtime, as me and my co-host Tim Kash presented MTV’s live red carpet show. This year the carpet was neon pink (oops, I more than clashed in my burgundy 70’s jumpsuit by Alice+Olivia, but oh well, a girl’s gotta channel Studio54 when she gets the urge), and first up to say hello was Coldplay. Chris Martin was on cheery form, having splattered himself in luminous paint to match the set on his performance. My other fave interviewees were Jessie J (no ego in sight, such a cool Brit chick) and LMFAO, who unzipped their leopard-print leotard for a bit of nipplegate, and let me temporarily steal their infamous white glasses to help me read the autocue. High jinx indeed!

I’ve launched my own lines! Woohoo!

This Autumn has been an absolute dream come true – I’ve launched my very own clothing line in America, and a shoes & jewellery line in the UK! I wanted to tell you guys a little more about what the pieces are inspired by, and how to wear them.

First up, my apparel ‘Louise Roe for HSN, the London Collection’ is inspired by three elements: the 1970’s (my favourite era for fashion); dressing women to flatter their shape and curves; and London’s unique sense of style. I wanted to create versatile, classic staples for every woman’s wardrobe (like a trench coat, black trousers, a flattering
dress) but at the same time, add a sense of my own style into the mix, through a modern and boho edge to each design, silhouette and color.
Every piece in the line is designed to work together: all the tones complement each other. In my mind, they’re a stylish go-to for busy women who love fashion, but don’t necessarily have the time for it.
Pieces that you’ll wear over and over because they hug your curves and flatter for both day and night.

My favourite piece in the collection is The Baker Street trench. I’ve been wearing it in Chive green around London with leather leggings and a loose cream top, feeling super chic!
Named after the street in London where the most famous trench-wearer in history resided, Sherlock Holmes; the trench coat is a wardrobe staple that every woman should own. But, I wanted to give this piece some cool detailing to make it stand out from the millions of other trench coats on the market. First of all, the a-line skirt scoots out, giving a feminine shape and making your waist look smaller. The lining is bright, it’s my signature print for the collection. I added storm-flaps and gold buttons for that silver screen elegance - Audrey Hepburn was a huge inspiration here - her dancing around the Parisian bar in Funny Face to be precise!

Another piece I can’t put down is the feather scarf, inspired by the one and only Farrah Fawcett. My iconic fashion era is the 1970’s, and the collection was heavily influenced by those laid-back looks, which I find sexy in a very understated way. I made sure the scarf was cut big, so big you can wrap it around your neck at least three times. And it’s full of Fall’s yummy war colors - an easy way to spice up a simple jeans and tee ensemble. Adele loves this scarf, Halle Berry and Jessica Alba also have one - the biggest stamp of approval ever!

Check out the collection, on sale here:
http://fashion.hsn.com/louise-roe_c-fa_a-8389_xc.aspx

Back in London, I’ve launched a pair of sexy shearling boots (called Toronto), super chic orange pumps (called Rio) and three key items of jewellery (called Miami) with http://www.stylistpick.com, the awesome website I blog and help style customers for. Oh and ps, it’s the same place where Cheryl Cole is launching her line too, not bad company! As always with my fashion choices, for this collection I wanted to avoid the drab, dark colours of winter and take a slice of summer boho and beaches into Fall. The chunky cocktail rings and cream mosaic cuff remind me of sun-soaked holidays, but instead of pairing it with a floaty kaftan and flats, I’m rocking them out with an Ikat printed chunky cardigan, skinny faded jeans and a baggy beanie.
Check out the collection here and let me know what you think! xx http://www.stylistpick.com/glam-hq/louise-roe/perfection-arrives-in-louise-roes-platform-court/

Travel Tips!

I’m finally back in LA for a few weeks - it feels great to sit still and stay in! Filming Plain Jane all over Europe this summer was awesome, but the constant flights take their toll. So, i picked up a few tips and tricks along the way, to make traveling an easier, chicer and cheaper affair. Numero uno… Before the flight: drink as much water as possible, and a couple of glasses of coconut water, which you can get at most supermarkets. Believe it or not, coconut water is more hydrating than regular water, and full of electrolytes, which give you energy and a vital boost your immune system (it’s quite gross if you count how many people splutter and sneeze around you on the flight!).
Do some yoga stretches or go for a brisk walk before you leave the
house: this makes such a difference to how much your feet and ankles swell up on board. And actually, I mentioned them before, but flight socks also help with avoiding cankles. On board, I take a baby bottle of Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair face serum, and apply it every few hours / every time your next movie finishes. www.esteelauder.com It’s like giving your skin a drink, without the greasiness of thick gloopy moisturizer, plus the container is only 30ml so it gets through security no probs. A cashmere beanie from Madeleine Thompson is the coziest thing of all time to put on your head.
http://www.madeleine-thompson.com  No matter where I’m traveling from or what I wear, I always somehow sit shivering on the plane, so the hat keeps me warm and I yank it down over my eyes to help me sleep. Tasmina Perry’s latest novel, Private Lives,  is another must-have for any trips this summer. It’s sitting next to me as I write, and is a corker.
I picked it up at the airport with pride, because Tasmina was one of my first bosses, when we both worked at In Style magazine a few year’s back. I was a wide-eyed wet-behind-the-ears features assistant, and she took me under her wing, gave me career advice I shall be forever grateful for, and we’re still good friends today. I sort of want to wave her book in my hand and scream ‘I know her!’ in the queue at WH Smith’s every time her latest blockbuster is published. Next up, and this is probably my greatest online find ever, before you book anything, register (for free) with www.tablethotels.com. Everyone I’ve recommended this winner-of-a-site to, has become hooked, just like me.
In a nutshell, the company guarantees the lowest online hotel rates available, you can search by hotel or city name, and best of all, the people there have impeccable taste. They cherry-pick the places, so you’ll only find chic boutique hotels. Bon Voyage!

Loving London

How brilliant is this weather? I am loving these long sunny summer days, and now that we’ve wrapped the second series of Plain Jane, I’m taking full advantage of any free moments I’ve got in London before I head back home to LA. First up, I spent a fabulous night at Browns Hotel in Mayfair. Nestled into a stylish nook between Bond Street and Albemarle Street, the former favourite hangout of Winston Churchill boasts some really stunning suites and a bar so chic it’s no wonder most of the nearby fashion editors and stylists all sink cocktails there. Low-lit, full of comfy sofas and peering out onto designer shops, even though the rest of the capital was on my doorstep, I didn’t leave my seat all night! Browns is honestly one of the best London hotels I’ve ever been too: such nice staff and the biggest yummiest breakfast I’ve eaten since being back in the UK: I went bold and opted for kedgeree and their version of an American pancake, one giant scone drizzled with maple syrup. Yes, the healthy diet was flung far out the window that day! http://www.brownshotel.com Up next, I’ll be working all week with Weight Watchers, as a style consultant. This means my favouirte thing in the world: makeovers! I’m taking lots of women who have lost weight through the scheme on a fab fashion journey: showing them how to dress their new shape, how to try new trends, and in some cases – how to walk in high heels! I can’t wait. If you’ve changed shape or weight and are struggling to dress your new body and figure out what suits you, check out some of my fashion tips, tricks and previous makeovers here:

Aisle Style

I’m back! Filming in London and all over Europe, for the second season of Plain Jane. Exhausting but such fun…this series is going to rock!
There’s another little event going on in London this week of course: the Royal Wedding. I can’t remember media hysteria like this for any event in history, and I’m going to be co-hosting E! Entertainment’s coverage for a full five hours. E!’s lovely anchor Giuliana Rancic, Dermot O’Leary, Angela Rippon and I will be discussing everything from the dress, the carriage, the vows to the flowers, the flyover and finally the kiss, which will take place on the balcony of Buckingham Palace…so don’t forget to tune in, we’re on from 9am until 2pm. So far I’ve heard that Kate will be putting on her own make-up (wow - not sure i’d be that brave!), I’ve also heard she will be wearing flowers in her hair, instead of a tiara. A very untraditional choice for a Royal wedding, but one that will look absolutely stunning no doubt. Her hair will be down and wavy, apparently - love that. And the stories of who will design Kate’s dress seem to vary every week, now critics are betting she will in fact, design her own. But I’d put my money on Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton, who has a beautiful, feminine but modern touch, and who has designed wedding dresses for close friends of Kate. Either way, I’m sure it will be elegant, chic, but simple – I can’t see Kate copying Diana with a 25 foot train and puffy sleeves, I’m sure it will be far more paired down than that, with a fitted waist and a little lace covering her arms and shoulders. One thing is for sure, however, that the whole world will be tuning in.

With a predicted global audience of over 3 billion, the bride’s going to give new meaning to wedding nerves. Good luck Kate!

London Calling

Today I bid a sad farewell to LA, the city that has become such a fun and sunny home, for a whole three months. I’m heading back to London to film the second series of my makeover show Plain Jane, for MTV, and the schedule looks intense! Just a few days off here and there, in between jetting around some beautiful cities in Europe, meeting all sorts of interesting people and most excitingly, shopping at every stop. I can’t wait to get started! I can’t figure out if America or Great Britain is more obsessed with Kate Middleton and her style, but I’ve certainly never seen such a media frenzy over anyone, even Princess Diana. Last week I hosted a segment about iconic Royalty and their fashion, for the Nate Berkus show in New York. It was such fun looking back through archives at photos of Princess Grace, Queen Elizabeth and of course Kate herself. So on the big day in a couple of weeks, on April 29th, I’ll be commentating on the fashion for E! Entertainment, live all day outside Westminster Abbey. Don’t forget to tune in – and tweet me @LouiseRoe what you think of everyone’s outfits!

Plain Jane UK!

The rain has not stopped pouring in LA. I actually feel like I’m back home in London, and in a way that’s been comforting! It’s been sodden for a solid week now, but I’d been planning a road-trip up the coast for the last couple of months, so a spot of torrential downpour was not going to deter me.
I’m lucky enough to be working with Range Rover at the moment, which also means I get to make my dad very jealous and drive one! So I packed the car full to the brim with wellies, waterproof jackets, scrabble, gin and tonic: the perfect emergency kit for a rainy weekend away. Two hours north of Los Angeles, up the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway – a route that takes you past rolling meadows, sandy beaches, clifftops, sunbathing seals and – if you’re really lucky – basking whales – is El Capitan. In a word: paradise. It’s a rustic resort a few miles past Santa Barbara, full of log cabins and Teepee tents, nestled into the mountains overlooking the ocean. A friend told me about it – and I booked immediately. I’m the kind of girl that loves the outdoors, but not enough to ever camp again in my life – I’ll be honest!
Inside the resort are no restaurants, no bars, just a babbling brook in front of your front porch, and a place to light a log fire. For dinner, I ordered a bbq set of steaks and ‘s’mores’, and wine. Pure bliss.
After a lovely weekend it was back to reality with a bump – right now I’m packing four hefty suitcases to take to London, where we start filming the second series of Plain Jane! I’m off in a week, and can’t wait to be back in the city for a whole two months. The first series is currently airing on MTV, and I’m looking forward to doing some more life-changing makeovers on women across the country. The Oscars

The Oscars were amazing! Seems like ages ago already, I watched the ceremony with close friends up at Soho House, which has an awesome view of Hollywood and the best Moscow Mule cocktails I’ve ever tasted. I wore a gold, pink and cream sparkly number from All Saints and carried my mum’s vintage hot pink clutch. I never thought I would like wearing pink, but I’m getting kind of obsessed with it for spring!
Tomorrow I’m off to Santa Barbara for a couple of nights R&R, I’ve never visited the area but apparently it’s full of beautiful beaches and vineyards, which sounds incredible. Then it’s back to LA on Friday for a Rodarte party at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), I’ve always wanted to meet the girls behind the label, who are besties with Natalie Portman and made all the costumes for Black Swan. Just had a fitting for what I’ll wear, and fell in love with a bright printed Issa gown, that falls to the floor - I’ll tweet piccies at the end of the week @Louiseroe - tell me what you think!

Golden Globes

And they’re off! The Golden Globes red carpet is just beginning, as I sit front row on my friend’s couch, predicting who will wear what, marveling and grimacing over and over. My best dressed list? Olivia Wilde, showcasing her new bangs and a deliciously sparkly full-volume dress by Marchesa; Green Hornet fever clearly affecting Angelina, Mila Kunis and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who all turned out in emerald green gowns and looked stunning, and finally Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester, who wowed in a full-length, long-sleeved nude gown by Burberry Prosum. There was barely a busom or thigh in sight, maybe it was the chilly weather – maybe it’s a new trend, but covering up seems to be the new showing off.
The awards season is just beginning and Los Angeles and there’s a real buzz about town…keep checking back for more updates, i’ll be bringing you all the red carpet style tips, tricks and news!

Happy New Year!

Christmas was exhausting! Right now i’m packing to head home to LA, after a wonderful couple of weeks back in England. For the first time in my life, snow covered the ground for my entire stay, all over every tree, window-sill and rooftop, and it looked beautiful. I spent each day with family and friends, playing with my baby nephew and nieces, listening to Granny’s stories and catching up with old high school friends. Fashion-wise i have to admit i couldn’t face lining up for the sales…way too cold on the streets for that! But i will be looking online to see what bargains i can nab. Now it’s time to get back to work and ready for awards season! I’m excited just thinking about which designers all the stars are going to wear, bring it on.

APRES SKI WITHOUT THE SKI

We’re snowed in! I made it back home, just outside of London, and yesterday we woke up to a beautiful blanket of white everywhere. We can’t get the car out of the driveway and I’m secretly loving the fact that I can’t do much except sit by the fire with a glass of vino and watch movies… The Holiday was last night’s choice and tonight…I’m thinking something Audrey Hepburn. I hope the ice clears soon though, because I need to finish my Christmas shopping. On my wishlist? Lanvin playing cards, a mustard-colour Smythson diary, a Madeleine Thompson cashmere beanie and anything at all from my favourite handbag and purse designer, Anya Hindmarch. Sleepless in Los Angeles

Wow. I have never needed sleep so much in my life! We’re working
16-hour days filming Plain Jane, but the adrenaline (and scary vitamin
B12 shot I had in the butt this week!) is keeping me going. The show is turning out beyond our wildest expectations though – honestly – the heartfelt emotion and incredible transformations, inside and out, of
each girl is going to have you glued to your seats. Speaking of
watching the screen, an animated conversation with my hair and make-up ladies inspired me to write a list of my favourite fashion films of all time. What are yours? Tweet me @Louiseroe and let me know!

1 .To Catch a Thief – Grace Kelly is the queen of all style icons, but it’s Cary Grant who steals her crown this time, with his Bretons, silk neck scarves and high-waisted slacks. Riviera-chic, we love you.

2. Pretty Woman – from the patent thigh-highs to her brown polka-dot-polo-watching tea dress, Julia Roberts nails it every scene.
We regularly follow her holy fashion grail down Rodeo Drive and finish
with a cocktail at the Beverly Wilshire, in homage to her awesomeness.

3. Casino – Sharon Stone’s vivid Pucci, sparkling dresses and fur coats are almost as ferosh as De Niro’s killer sherbet suits…gangster
glamour.

4. 500 Days of Summer –Zoe Deschanel’s looks have a simplicity and plainness to them, which makes for a very feminine, understated
elegance.

5. Marie Antoinette – Manolo Blahnik made every pair of the shoes; US Vogue shot a tribute issue at The Palace of Versailles; I want to lick
the screen and eat this entire movie.

6. Le Dernier Metro – I studied this at school, and so began my
obsession with Catherine Deneuve. Red lipstick was never, ever rationed during the war, to boost morale, and this film makes you understand
why.

7. Sex and the City 1 – SATC my schooling in style, studying every
episode of the TV series, and this movie is the cherry on top. Stylist
Pat Field is a genius.

8. Funny Face – impossible to pick a favourite scene –perhaps the
moment she catches a fish in the Seine, or swans down the sweeping
staircase in red silk - Audrey Hepburn and her 19-inch waist show off Givenchy’s couture gowns to sweet perfection.

9. Annie Hall – up there with Coco Chanel as the lady to make tailored trousers look incredible. Androgynous dressing, we’re all over it.

10. La Dolce Vita – decadence, glamour, style, Champagne. This movie
makes you want to learn Italian, not to mention dance around a fountain
in your evening gown.

Plain Jane starts filming

It’s the first week of filming Plain Jane, my new makeover show on the CW network, and things are going great! We’re whizzing all over California doing some crazy, some scary, some stylish and some very unexpected things so make sure you tune in on July 28th to catch it all in action! In an attempt to be organized, I bought myself a
clothing rail to set out all the dresses I’m wearing each day on, and after about 2 hours of getting mad at the instructions and running out for more hangers, the whole thing was up, stacked end to end and looking like a fabulous rainbow of clothes.

That was, until it decided to tumble over and splatter everything across my living room floor, buttons and beads and belts strewn everywhere. Arrrgh! It’s 5am and my hair and make-up ladies are knocking on my door so I’d better run. Back soon xx

Missing the footie but loving ‘The City’

Hopping on a plane to Chicago today to film an exciting project in Oprah’s very own studio – my heroine! Sadly ‘O’ wont be there but I’ll still stoked just to set foot on her legendary turf. Then it’s back to Lala to begin filming Plain Jane, my new makeover series for the CW, check out the trailer on www.cwtv.com. We’ve got a full-on filming schedule starting at 6am on Saturday, so I’m missing England’s first footie match (against America…), which is such a bummer because I love watching them play. And don’t miss MTV’s The City too – I’m doing some work for Elle.com in New York and being filmed for the show too – Joe Zee is an absolute star!

Hot in the city!

I landed in New York on Easter Sunday and the place feels like mid-summer! (Cue great excuse to go shopping because all I brought are winter clothes…), but I’m staying in the Lower East Side for the most part and loving this area. So many hidden vintage boutiques on Orchid and Stanton Social has the best spicy tuna rolls ever!
I’m here for a bunch of meetings and filming for Piperlime (Gap’s awesome site, check it out), and managing to squeeze in a few parties along the way! Looking forward to the Converse 25th anniversary bash tomorrow night - I’ll let you know the scoop first thing Friday!

Calm before the storm

Having a few days of yoga and chilling (and sleeping- at last) in Palm Springs before hitting NYC on Sunday. Feeling refreshed after a crazy month though and excited to do some filming over in the Big Apple!

Doing a bunch of meetings, dinners and hopefully shopping over there too, I land the night before I hit Coachella so I need to source some fab party pants and bikinis!! Xx

Red Carpet Ready? Sort of!

I landed back in LA this week to face Academy Awards madness. The a-list is out in force posing at parties all week, and I will be covering the whole big day and night on Sunday live on E!, so tune in! I’ve been kindly leant a bunch of dresses to wear, I’ve got three changes through the night and am thinking 1 long, 2 short, 1 one shoulder and all bright…
Hollywood is a hot place to be right now- you can feel the buzz in the air. Right I’m off to a fitting with Julia Clancy, one of my designer buddies who makes dreamy kaftan-style gowns. Loves it. xx
